Every now and again a spa day is just what we need to feel rejuvenated and fresh. Alone time can be great for mental health and wellness, especially when we pay special attention to hygiene and comfort.
Heading to the spa can set you back a few hundred dollars and many of us can't find room for this self-care routine in our budgets. Instead of dishing out dollars or swiping your last paycheck away at a fancy spa, try a DIY (do-it-yourself) spa day at home!

A spa day doesn't mind whether it's a bright, sunny morning or a cozy afternoon with a bit of chill. Any day throughout the week where you have free time for self-care is perfect to set aside for a spa day. Plan out your spa day a day or two in advance so you have the time available, no other obligations to stress you out, and your materials prepared to make the experience smooth and enjoyable.
How To Prepare The Perfect Spa Day
Before your chosen spa day approaches, you will want to make sure your spa area and materials are clean and ready. I always use my bathroom and bedroom as my chosen spa areas for these days, and I like to clean up before so it feels like a real spa experience.
Here's how you can quickly clean up/organize your bathroom for a spa day:
Pick up all clothing/towels/etc. off the floor and counters and put away
Throw away all trash like empty bottles and toilet paper rolls
Put makeup and hygiene essentials in their proper place, and be sure to use drawers, cabinets, and shelves so your counters are not cluttered
With cleaning supplies of your choice, wipe counters, sinks, the shower, and the toilet
Clean the floors and mats (consider adding fluffy bath mats to your spa day/everyday routine for added coziness)
Here's how you can quickly clean up/organize your bedroom for a spa day:
Put all clothing away in closet or drawers
Clear off any tables, stands, and chairs of clutter
Wash the sheets and pillowcases; make the bed
Vacuum the floor
Once your spa area is clean, organized, and cozy to your liking you are ready to begin planning your spa routine. Planning your spa routine may seem tedious or unnecessary, but it helps your day move smoothly without any hiccups. A plan, even a simple outline, helps your day remain worry-free and stay in the present moment.
Planning Your Spa Day
Before your spa day begins, you'll want to have an outline to follow so you don't miss out on any pampering. Decide a day or two before what you want to include in your routine so you can have the materials ready. If there is anything you want to add to your routine that you don't own already, be sure to have it ready in advance so you don't feel disappointed when your routine rolls around.
Create a flexible routine
Have in mind the activities you want to include in your spa routine. Do you want to focus on one activity like skincare, haircare, or nail care over other activities? Are you going to take a bath/shower before, during, or after your routine? Knowing the spa rituals you want to include and the general order of events is crucial to your day staying stress-free.
Set out your materials
Before you get started, make sure you have everything you need/want for your spa day in your cabinets already. You don't want to reach for your favorite bottle of lotion just to find out it's empty right before your routine.

Get in the mindset
Stay in the present moment during your spa day to enjoy the most out of your experience. You don't want to feel guilty about the past or worry about the future during a time of much-needed relaxation. Clear your mind beforehand with a few mindful meditations or journal prompts.
Make it your special time
This means take advantage of this self-care opportunity to the fullest and personalize it to your liking! Create a playlist of your favorite relaxing songs and add some essential oils like eucalyptus, or one of your choosing, to a diffuser. There are plenty of benefits to aromatherapy you can take advantage of!
Light some candles, burn some incense, do whatever you like to add an element of your personality. Pretend you are designing a new spa... one made only for you! Hang up your robe and towels so they are fresh and dry; turn your phone on silent or leave it out of your spa area. Do whatever you need to make it customized to your taste and comfort.
Now you're prepared to plan, set-up, and enjoy your spa day! Creating a routine can be as simple or complex as you like, meaning a short outline or a list of steps down to the detail. Have your spa area clean and organized and your materials out and ready. Create an atmosphere of pure relaxation with music, fragrance, and comfortable attire.
